Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)
information for the UT-Houston Research Community

due dates

"On November 6, 2007, Texas voters approved Proposition 15 - HJR 90, the constitutional amendment which allows the State of Texas to establish the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (the Institute) and allows the Institute to issue $3 billion in general obligation bonds over ten years to fund grants for cancer research and prevention. The Institute may invest the grants strategically in cancer research, clinical trials, and laboratory facility construction in Texas. The Institute will continue to implement the Texas Cancer Plan. "

This site will serve to update UT-Houston investigators and research staff on CPRIT-related extramural funding opportunities. Please check back frequently or contact Peter Davies, Executive Vice President for Research, Susie Day, SPH Associate Dean for Research, or Johnna Kincaid, Executive Director, OSP, with questions.

  • Applicants may request a maximum of $1,000,000 in total costs per year for up to 2 years.

Health Promotion, Public Education, and Outreach Programs

  • The goal of awards made in response to this RFA is to fund proposals for education or research efforts that have the potential to demonstrate change in the behaviors that can prevent or reduce the risk of cancer.
  • projects or partnerships should apply evidence based strategies in novel ways, leverage resources and demonstrate measurable outcomes in personalbehaviors leading to prevention, risk education, early detection of cancer, and quality of life improvement in survivors.
  • Applicants may request a maximum of $300,000 in total costs per year for up to 2 years.

Individual Investigator Research Awards

  • The goal of awards made in response to this RFA is to fund exceptionally innovative research projects with great potential impact that are directed by a single investigator.
  • Applicants need not be trained specifically in cancer research. However, successful applicants should be working in a research environment capable of supporting potentially high-impact studies.
  • Applicants may request a maximum of $1,000,000 in total costs per year for up to 4 years.
  • An investigator may submit only one application under this RFA during this funding cycle.
  • There is no limit on the number of applications from UTHSC-Houston.

High Risk/High Impact Research Awards NOTE: Applicants selected for submission have been notified

  • CPRIT High-Impact/High-Risk Research Awards seek to provide short-term funding to explore the feasibility of high-risk projects that, if successful, would contribute major new insights into the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancers.
  • High-Impact/High-Risk Research Awards are expected to provide the foundation for individual or multiple-investigator awards upon completion.
  • Applicants may request up to $200,000 over 24 months, inclusive of both direct and indirect costs.
  • UTHSC-H is limited to two applications.
