Complex Determinants in Health:  Interactions of Genetic Factors and Environmental Influences
Faculty / Trainee Seminar & Student and Postdoc Poster Session

** Abstract Registration Ends October 15, 2008 **

STUDENT PARTICIPATION
All UTHSC-H enrolled Students are eligible to submit an abstract for the poster session.  Students may submit only one abstract as first author in either of the following research categories:  clinical/translational and basic sciences.  Students must register on-line and submit their abstract using the Registration webpage at https://oac9.hsc.uth.tmc.edu/jsp/ResearchForum

ABSTRACT GUIDELINES:
300 word maximum, Arial 10 pt. font, saved as RTF (Rich Text Format) no larger than 1MB.  The poster board sizes are indicated below.  A panel of judges will review the abstracts and the top 50 abstracts will be selected for poster presentations.  Students will be notified no later than October 30, 2008 if their abstract has been chosen.


POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW PARTICIPATION
All UTHSC-H postdoctoral fellows are eligible to submit an abstract for the poster session.  Abstracts must be submitted on-line using the registration webpage at https://oac9.uth.tmc.edu/jsp/ResearchForum

ABSTRACT GUIDELINES:
300 word maximum, Arial 10 pt. font, saved as RTF (Rich Text Format) no larger than 1MB.  Postdocs may submit only one abstract as first author.  Dr. Jack Byrne will assemble a group of judges who will review all abstracts and select the top 25 abstracts for poster presentations.  Those selected to participate will be notified no later than October 30, 2008.


POSTERBOARD INSTRUCTIONS:
Students and Postdocs may put up their poster in the IMM Atrium on Friday, November 21, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and are requested to attend the Faculty Symposium beginning at 9:00 am in the IMM Auditorium.  The poster session will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.  Prizes will be awarded at the close of the session.

All board sizes are 8 feet wide x 4 feet tall; velcro will be provided.


JUDGING AND AWARDS

  • Six student awards will be given: 1st prize - $400, 2nd prize – 300; 3rd prize - $200 will be awarded to the first author on the top three posters demonstrating innovative research in each of the two areas – clinical/translational and basic science.
  • Two postdoctoral fellow awards will be given:  one $400 award to the first author on the top poster demonstrating innovative research in clinical/translational sciences and one $400 award to the first author on the top poster demonstrating innovative research in basic science.
  • Clinical:  Research that addresses issues or information related to individual identifiable patients or human subjects
  • Translational:  involves application of knowledge gained in one context to a different contact.  Most commonly T1 – bench-to-bedside or T2 academic center to community
  • Basic: Research that addresses basic mechanisms or basic processes or the area of health research.
