How is Underrepresented defined?

Hispanic, African American, American Indian, and Pacific Islander are usually considered underrepresented. It is up to the Institution to define Underrepresented. For example: Upon reviewing the number of Asians by department it is determined that in the Medical School's department of Psychiatry Asians are underrepresented. Requesting a Supplement to increase Asian representation in this area would be considered.

Are women considered Underrepresented?

Women are not considered Underrepresented. Underrepresentation is usually determined by ethnicity.

Can I contact a PI from another Institution to discuss obtaining a supplement to his/her grant?

You are encouraged to contact any NIH funded investigator to discuss the Supplements.

How long does it take for the application to be approved?

Reveiw takes 8 to 12 weeks.
