Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Training requirements for personnel working with blood and blood products

Initial Training
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) require that all employees who work with potentially infectious materials attend bloodborne pathogens training annually. Personnel working with biological agents are required to attend a training class within 30 days of hire. In addition to providing useful information regarding exposure to biological agents, the training classes offer very useful information regarding what Personal Protective Equipment to wear, proper biological waste disposal, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Annual Refresher Training
Annual refresher training is required for all personnel exposed to potentially infectious materials and bloodborne pathogens

Training Classes
The below dates are for Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) training. If these dates are not convenient, you can attend "Basic Clinical and Laboratory Safety Training" which also includes bloodborne pathogen training (shipping training not included) which is offered monthly at various locations in the CYF, SON, and DBB buildings.

Online BBP Training
The "Bloodborne Pathogen" training class can also be taken online with following the following link. Documentation of online training is obtained by taking a test included with the presentation and printing out your own certificate. A valid UTHSC-H or UTP login and password is required for access. Certificates
It is important that certificates be kept by personnel attending the training class in the event that documentation is required by either UTHSC-H safety personnel, a regulatory agency, or a future employer. Certificates should be located in your main laboratory.

*If you would like to schedule a class or require special accomodations especially for your laboratory or department, please contact us at 500-4206 and we will be happy to assist your needs.
