Hazardous Waste Disposal Procedures

Radiocative Waste

Solid & LS Vials Segregate by half-life (<300 days & >300 days), place in black opaque bag, seal, complete and attach waste tag. Place in designated container at waste alcoves listed below.
Biological (Animal) Segregate by half-life (<300 days & >300 days), place in two black opaque bags, place absorbent into bag, seal, complete and attach waste tag. Call hazardous waste line for pickup.
Liquid Place in plastic gallon jug, complete attached waste label. Call hazardous waste line.
Mixed Place in compatible container. Complete and attach waste tag. Call hazardous waste line.
Note: Bags, liners, tie wraps, are located in the radioactive waste alcoves or obtained by calling x5837

The waste alcoves are maintained by the Environmental Protection Division. All supplies (bags, tags, and labels) are located at each waste alcove. Please contact EHS at 500-8100 if you encounter any problems or supplies are needed. Keys to the alcoves are obtained by contacting the Environmental Protection Division.

Cemical Waste

Liquid & Solid Place waste in compatible container, complete and attach hazardous waste label, and call hazardous waste line for pickup. Remove from lab within 72 hours of filling container.
Empty containers Deface label, mark "trash" or   "housekeeping", and place near regular trash.
Broken glass Place in broken glass container or cardboard box labeled "broken glass," seal with tape, and place near regular trash for housekeeping.   Broken glass containers are provided free by EHS.
Pharmaceuticals Call hazardous waste line for pickup.

Medical/Infectious/Biological

Solid /Sharps

Place in red bag, autoclave, then place in black opaque bag, dispose in designated container, and record activities.
If you do not have access to an autoclave: place in biohazard container, attach biological waste tag. Call hazardous waste line for pickup.
DBB:   Place in approved container, place in room DBB 3.099.
Sharps must be placed into approved "sharps" container provided free by EHS.

Liquid Add disinfectant (EPA-registered; bleach, 2-propanol), immerse for at least 10 minutes, pour down drain, and record activities.
Animal Segregate animal carcasses from associated waste (plastic, paper, and bedding). Attach biological waste disposal tag. Call hazardous waste line for pickup.

Pathological

Call Kurt Clark (500-6156).
