The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
utilizes diesel and natural gas fired emergency electric generators
to provide emergency power to critical applications within
UTHSC-H facilities. Use is limited to preventative maintenance
and power outage events and will be restricted to 52 hours
annually for units installed after Oct. 1, 2001, and 100 hours
annually for units installed before Oct. 1, 2001. Annual use
is calculated on a 12 month rolling average, and each emergency
generator’s use is recorded in a log and transferred
to a use spreadsheet maintained by UTHSC-H’s Environmental
Protection Program. The emergency electric generators are
operated under permit by rule authorization 106.511.
Natural gas fired boilers are used in the University Center
Tower and the Institute of Molecular Medicine at 7000 Fannin,
to provide domestic hot water and steam for building systems.
These boilers are operated under permit by rule authorization
106.183.
Two natural gas fired pathological waste incinerators are
located in the Medical School Building, 6431 Fannin. These
units use a common exhaust stack and are not operated simultaneously.
These pathological waste incinerators are authorized under
SE 90, registration # 33286, issued 8/30/1996.
