| An aneurysm is an increase in the size
of a blood vessel caused by weakness in the vessel wall.
This weakness may lead to rupture of the vessel and catastrophic
bleeding. |

| How do I know if I have an aneurysm? |
| |
| Occasionally, large aneurysms may impinge
on adjacent structures and cause symptoms such as pain,
or they may pulse in a way that can be felt. Many aneurysms
produce no symptoms. Imaging studies are the best way
to diagnose an aneurysm. |

| If I have an aneurysm of the aorta,
do I need surgery? |
| |
| That depends on the size and location
of the aneurysm and a number of other things like age
and physical condition of the patient. An appropriate
consultation with a physician is the only way to determine
that with confidence. |

| Is endovascular repair better than
open surgery? |
| |
| No real consensus exists in the surgical
community about that, and it depends on several factors.
Our group’s general feeling is that there are specific
instances where endovascular repair is beneficial, but
the technology is evolving and is in need of improvement
before it is used routinely. |
