Benfits for Family Medicine Residents


Salaries for residents are still among the best in Texas:

PGY 1 residents earn $44,301 annually

PGY 2 residents earn $45,970 annually

PGY 3 residents earn $47,010 annually


Disability, medical, dental, life, and liability insurance are provided at no cost to residents. Coverage for dependents is available at competitive group rates.


All first year residents receive two calendar weeks of vacation. Second and third year residents receive three calendar weeks of vacation.

Maternity/Paternity Leave:

Residents may also be granted family leave for the birth of a child or to care for a spouse or elderly parent. When on Family Medical Leave of Absence, all sick time and vacation time will be exhausted first, and then the resident will go on Leave Without Pay.

Continuing Medical Education / Book Allowance:

In addition to vacation, qualifying PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents may be granted leaves of absence of up to 5 days per year to attend educational meetings. PGY-1's are excused to take the USMLE. An annual stipend of $1,000.00 is available to PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents in this program who meet didactic attendance requirements. This money may be used to purchase books, to attend CME conferences, to pay for in state license/exam fees, and medically related items such as stethoscopes.


Meals are provided to residents at both Memorial Hermann Hospital and LBJ General Hospital free of charge while on call.


Parking at LBJ General Hospital, The Acres Home Health Center, and The Aldine Health Center is provided at no cost to residents. Parking in the Medical Center is available for a payroll deduction of approximately $50 per month. You will park at UTPB lot on Fannin.
