The Cheves and Isabella Smythe Professorship in Medicine
The University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Medical School and The Department of Internal Medicine would like to recognize Dr. Cheves and Isabella Smythe for establishing The Cheves and Isabella Smythe Professorship in Medicine. It is anticipated that the first award will be given in the 2011 academic year. This program is open to all Faculty in the Department of Medicine. The purpose of the professorship is to allow a scientist who has a new research career to develop a significant research or educational program in the School of Medicine. These programs are directed toward but not limited to, the support of new or novel research and educational programs which would enhance research and/or educational strategies.
Clinical Education
Our goal is to develop physicians who approach medicine with compassion, professionalism, and intellectual discipline.
Research
The research programs of the Department of Internal Medicine are fueled by the desire to improve our understanding of human health and disease and to develop innovative means to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases.
Patient Care
The Department's clinical services span the continuum of primary care to subspecialty care and even intensive care medicine monitored from remote sites.
The University of Texas at Houston Memorial Hermann Center for Healthcare Quality and Safety was created in November 2007 with ongoing extramural grants and support from the UT Health Science Center at Houston and the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. The Center continues to grow recruiting new faculty (who may be appointed in any Health Science Center School) and by adding members from outside UT who maintain substantial and ongoing research collaborations with us.
As discussed at the recent Town Hall Meeting, the application for the Cheves and Isabella Smythe Distinguished Professorship in Medicine is open to all Assistant and Associate Professors. The due date is March 31st, 2011.
