The University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Medical School and The Department of Internal Medicine would like to recognize Dr. Cheves and Isabella Smythe for establishing The Cheves and Isabella Smythe Professorship in Medicine. It is anticipated that the first award will be given in the 2011 academic year. This program is open to all Faculty in the Department of Medicine. The purpose of the professorship is to allow a scientist who has a new research career to develop a significant research or educational program in the School of Medicine. These programs are directed toward but not limited to, the support of new or novel research and educational programs which would enhance research and/or educational strategies.
Dr. Cheves Smythe was our first Dean of the University of Texas Medical School from 1970 – 1975 and returned as Dean Pro Term from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Smythe skillfully guided the School through its early years with his long standing commitment to the fields of Geriatrics and Education and his exemplary standards of leadership. He is certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. In addition to his interest in medical school organization and management, he has been recognized as a devoted and appreciated teacher of clinical medicine. His current efforts are to participate in, and strengthen the medical teaching at Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital as well as to assist in the development of a program in Geriatric Medicine. As a devoted wife and mother, Isabella Smythe has been at Dr. Cheves Smythe’s side for 61 years and together they have raised five children. Throughout the years they have shared many awards and endowments. The Department of Medicine would like to thank you for your dedication and commitment to the University of Texas.
Applications
Application for the Cheves and Isabella Smythe Distinguished Professorship in Medicine is open to all Assistant and Associate Professors.
- Directed to but not limited to the support of new or novel research and educational programs which would enhance research and/or educational strategies.
- Appointment will be for a limited term and may either be renewed once or rotated to another promising Faculty after a single term.
- $25,000/year for 3 year term
- Research: would allow an investigator to continue and expand a new and novel research strategy interest that would ultimately receive funding from national granting agencies.
- Education: would allow an investigator to develop and expand an educational program that would improve mentorship and training and develop a large nationally recognized educational program
- Can use for salary or other support of their program to offset other duties and responsibilities

- NIH format Abstract
- A highlighted summary of the candidate’s outstanding educational/research contributions (1-3 pages);
- A personal statement which includes a plan for the professorship, plans to generate data as well as long term strategies (3-6 pages)
- A complete and current curriculum vitae
- 3 letters of support
