Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism has broad interests in clinical care, education, and research. The individual faculty have been recognized for their clinical care by academic awards as well as in publications such as “SuperDocs” in Houston Monthly. The UT Diabetes and Endocrinology clinic is located in the UT Professional Building, sees over 4000 patients/year, and is associated with an ADA certified Diabetes Self Management Program. The comprehensive care program includes insulin pump management with capability to download pumps, meters, and glucose sensors. We have specialized clinics for endocrine disorders and diabetes in pregnancy and we are associated with the UT Pancreas transplant program. We offer thyroid ultrasounds and fine needle aspiration in the clinic for care of patients with thyroid disorders. Equipment to measure Bone Mineral Density is available in the clinic.
The Division also staffs LBJ General Hospital and has an active clinic where thyroid ultrasounds and fine needle aspirations are performed, in addition to general endocrine care.
Each faculty member has a special clinical and research interest. Dr. Shahla Nader is jointly appointed in the Department of OB/GYN and Reproductive Sciences, and in the Division of Endocrinology. Her major interests are infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome, insulin resistance syndromes, and Turner’s syndrome. Dr. Mary Ruppe operates a metabolic bone clinic and conducts research on calcium and bone disorders. Dr. Anu Davis focuses on endocrine disorders during pregnancy, and thyroid nodules. Dr. Philip Orlander focuses on management of diabetes and its complications. Dr. Perry Bickel’s research interests are in the cellular regulation of fat cells.
