Clinical Care

Overview
We have developed parallel geriatric and palliative care services at LBJ General Hospital and the Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medicine Center. LBJ Hospital is part of the Harris County Hospital District, the 4th largest hospital district in the U.S. Memorial Hermann Medical Center is part of the Memorial Health Care Systems, the largest hospital system in the city, the state, and the 9th largest nationwide. In addition, a private outpatient clinic and a house call program are supported through UT Physicians.
Inpatient Services
Memorial Hermann and LBJ Hospital have a geriatric unit in which patients are managed by an interdisciplinary team designed not only to treat their acute issues, but help prevent the risks accompanied with hospitalization and arrange for a successful discharge that meets the needs of the family as well as the patient.
Consult Service
The consult service helps direct the care for geriatric patients on other surgical and medical subspecialty services. They help manage both geriatric issues as well as medical issues related to the older patient’s care.
Palliative Care Service
The palliative care serve evaluates and treats patients requiring palliative care, pain management, and/or hospice services.
Outpatient Clinic
The outpatient clinic offers primary care services for older or medically complicated patients. Additionally, subspecialists and other internists/general practitioners can also request a consult for specific geriatric issues.
House Call Program
The geriatric house call program provides routine medical care to patients who are immobile or at risk for frequent hospitalizations due to their chronic disease. (This is not an option for urgent care)
