The Division has been extremely successful in its research program. The research team includes a trio of Ph.D. faculty. The central theme of Dr. Ah-Lim Tsai’s research is the function of heme-containing proteins that are important in cardiovascular functions. He investigates the structural, bio-chemical and biophysical properties of nitric oxide synthases (NOS), using isolated NOS domains and the intact NOS proteins, as well as the structural basis and mechanism for activation of soluble guanylate cyclase activity by nitric oxide binding to the heme center. Dr. Tsai also has a longstanding history in studying the reaction mechanism and structure/function of the key enzymes involved in biosynthesis of prostaglandins. Both prostaglandin H synthase-1 and -2 isozymes are investigated in collaboration with Dr. Richard Kulmacz. Research in Dr. Kulmacz’s laboratory focuses on two major areas: the roles of substrate structure, redox environment and human enzyme polymorphisms on regulation of prostaglandin synthesis, and the relationship between structure and function among human cytochrome b561 family members. Dr. Lee-Ho Wang investigates structure-function relationships of thromboxane synthase and prostacyclin synthase. Dr. Miguel Escobar performs clinical and translational research involving bleeding and hemostasis in patients with hemophilia and other congenital and acquired bleeding disorders. Dr. Harinder S. Juneja conducts clinical research in patients with sickle cell disease. He is also actively involved in stem cell research in collaboration with Texas Heart Institute and Department of Neurology at the UT Medical School at Houston. There are also active collaborations between Hematology/Oncology investigators and others in the Department of Medicine, other departments and those in neighboring institutions, including M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Rice University, and Baylor College of Medicine.
