How to Participate

The steps to participate in the research projects

Thank you for your interest in our research on the genetic basis of aortic aneurysms and dissections! Individuals who would like to participate in our study should follow these steps:

  1. Informed Consent
Participants must read carefully and sign informed consent forms, authorizing our lab to perform studies on their samples. Each family member must complete a separate consent form to be included in our studies. If the family member is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian should provide consent.

  2. Contact our Genetic Counselor
Please contact Van Tran-Fadulu, our genetic counselor, by e-mail or phone, letting her know of your intention to participate in our research. Include your name, address, phone number, and date of birth, as well as the names and contact information for other family members who have suffered an aortic aneurysm or dissection and might be interested in participating in our study.

  3. Blood Sample
We ask for a blood sample from all family members who have consented to participate. About 20 cc of blood will be collected and used to perform an analysis to look for a link , looking for alterations in the genes that may cause aortic aneurysms and dissections. Our laboratory will be happy to send kits to collect blood samples from each participant. Take these kits to your primary care physician to have your blood drawn, and then send the collected samples back to our laboratory.

  4. Echocardiogram
We strongly recommend that every first and second-degree relative of an affected family member be screened for thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissection. The recommended diagnostic test is an echocardiogram, 2-D, M-mode. We offer echocardiograms free of charge for all participants. However, the test must be performed here in Houston at The University of Texas Medical School.

  5. Medical Records
We also request that you send copies of your medical records, especially those pertaining to aortic disease status.

  6. Reporting of Results
This is a research study and can not serve for a clinical diagnosis.
