Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine Education

The teaching program of the Pulmonary Division provides opportunities for students, housestaff and fellows to acquire education in the basic and clinical aspects of respiratory and critical care medicine. Emphasis is placed on pathophysiology, respiratory therapy, intensive respiratory care, pulmonary function testing, diagnostic techniques, and the clinical approach to chest diseases, and all aspects of sleep medicine including polysomnography.

Medical student instruction begins during the second academic year in the mechanisms of disease course. Fourth-year electives are offered at affiliated hospitals. A tutorial laboratory elective is also available.


Outpatient Experience
  • Fellows attend Pulmonary Continuity Clinic one afternoon/week at University of Texas Health Science Center Professional Building with an assigned Pulmonary Medicine faculty supervisor for 4 hours/week.
  • Fellows rotating at LBJ General Hospital on the Pulmonary Consult of Services attend Thursday afternoon LBJ Pulmonary Consultative Clinic under the direction of Dr. Rosa Estrada-Y-Martin for 3-4 hours/week and LBJ Sleep Clinic on Monday afternoon.
  • Fellows on Sleep rotations attend Wednesday afternoon Sleep Consultation Clinic at University of Texas Health Science Center Professional Building with Dr. Richard Castriotta for 4 hours/week and LBJ Sleep Clinic on Monday afternoon.
  • Fellows on rotations at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center attend outpatient clinics with monthly Pulmonary consult attendings for 3-5 hours/week.

Work in Progress

  • Partnership with the Methodist Lung Transplantation program to provide an opportunity for the fellows to develop clinical competence in this area of Pulmonary Medicine.
  • Development of clinical rotations in Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
  • Clinical Rotations at Select Specialty Hospital in the Texas Medical Center for long term follow-up and management of pulmonary patients after leaving the ICU need of long-term acute care and ventilation weaning
