FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The University of Texas, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, offers a ACGME approved two-year clinical fellowship, which is designed to provide comprehensive training within all of the subdivisions of endocrinology. This program is designed to fulfill the needs of those trainees who intend to pursue academic careers in clinical and /or basic endocrine research, as well as those who anticipate their future activities to be the clinical practice of the specialty.

Approximately 10 months of the fellowship are spent on one of the several in-patient consult services. These facilities include Memorial Hermann Hospital, LBJ General Hospital, and for oncologic endocrinology, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. In addition, rotations in pediatric endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, care of the pregnant diabetic patients, wound care, nuclear medicine and ophthalmology are all included in the fellowship program. Adequate time is allotted for research activities. All fellows have two continuity clinics weekly, at LBJ and the UT Professional Building.

The University of Texas Medical School in located in the Texas Medical Center, which is the home to multiple academic institutions, including the Baylor College of Medicine, UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, UT School of Public Health and Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Clinical experience includes several different venues ranging from primary care oriented facilities (Lyndon B. Johnson County Hospital) to secondary and tertiary care at Memorial Hermann Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. There is an active pituitary surgery service at Memorial Hermann Hospital, including a Gamma Knife facility,

The ambulatory experience varies from general endocrinology at LBJ Endocrine Clinic and the UT Endocrine Clinic, to specialized clinics such as reproductive endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology and oncologic endocrinology. Elective rotations in specific areas of endocrine care and clinical investigation are available throughout the Texas Medical Center.

Multiple conferences are held on a weekly basis. Endocrine grand rounds are held weekly and include involvement from the five academic centers within the Texas Medical Center (UT Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine, The VA Medical Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children's Hospital and the Nutrition Research Center). Outside experts are invited to update new areas of clinical and basic science investigation. There is a weekly multidisciplinary case conference, which includes discussions related to pediatric, reproductive, oncologic and internal medicine endocrinology. The fellows are expected to participate and present at the conference. There is a weekly fellows conference held at the VA Medical Center. This conference includes fellows from UT as well as Baylor College of Medicine. There is a weekly journal club which includes fellow presentations.

All fellows are expected to engage in research activities. A clinical research center is available on site. Opportunities exist in basic science investigation, clinical research, and epidemiology. The Center for Clinical Research and Evidence Based Medicine provides a clinical research curriculum, which is funded by the NIH and administered jointly by The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The program is designed to promote clinical research expertise among clinical research investigators at the fellow and junior faculty level. Additional courses are available at the UT School of Public Health.
