FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES FOR RESIDENTS ENDOCRINE FELLOW RESPONSIBILITIES The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship Program is an ACGME approved two-year clinical fellowship program which accepts a total of 3 fellows and includes twenty-four months of which at least eight months are on the Consult Service covering Hermann Hospital and LBJ, two months of Pediatric Endocrinology, two months of Reproductive Endocrinology, one month of Oncologic Endocrinology, and at least 6 months of research. The remaining time may be spent in the following activities according to the interest of the fellow: Reproductive Endocrinology, Oncologic Endocrinology at M.D.Anderson, Consult Service, and Research. All fellows have two panel clinics, once weekly at LBJ Hospital and once weekly at UT Professional Building. Responsibilities on the Consult Service includes evaluation of all consult patients, review of data with resident or students on service, writing a note on the patients, communicating with other house staff from other disciplines, and performing direct patient care in certain circumstances. In their panel clinics, fellows are expected to see and evaluate their patients, dictate a consultation note to the referring physician, and develop a management plan. All patients are also seen by the attending physician who will review the plan. The main distinction between the first and second year fellow includes added responsibility for patient care, and increased teaching responsibilities for students and residents on the service. In addition, all fellows will be responsible for conducting a Journal Club once a month and a Clinical Conference once a month. All fellows are expected to engage in research activities. The extent and type of research activity is dependent on the interest of the fellow and the agreement of the faculty and Program Director. We have established a time table for research activities which includes a presentation of the progress within six to eight months of the initiation of the fellowship. The faculty will review the performance of the
fellow, including research activities and clinical activities, at six
and nine months. If a faculty believe that the minimum requirements have
not been met by nine months, the fellow will be so informed and the contract
will not be renewed for the second year. The fellow will be given a copy
of these requirements prior to beginning
