The Division of
Hematology's major academic goal is to promote the understanding of a
wide scope of hematological diseases. The diagnosis and management of
these diseases require a broadly based knowledge in bone marrow
physiology and biochemistry, tumor cell growth, hemostasis and
thrombosis, red blood cell and hemoglobin molecular biology and
immunology. The division has developed good collaboration with the
departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Pharmacology in
The University of Texas Medical School and The University of Texas M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center. The interactions enhance research, teaching and
patient activities.
The division provides
both inpatient and ambulatory care services. It provides consultation
services at Hermann and Lyndon B. Johnson General hospitals and M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center. The Gulf States Hemophilia Diagnostic and
Treatment Center is operated under the direction of this division. The
Special Hemostasis laboratory performs platelet aggregation and
adhesiveness studies, clotting factor and complement component assays
and platelet antibody tests.
Research in the division
includes an interdepartmental program in vascular diseases,
prostaglandin research, monocyte-macrophage physiology and
biochemistry, clinical and laboratory hyperthermia, cell
differentiation and platelet and endothelial cell function.
