The
academic goals of this division is to teach the biology of cancer
underlying the diagnosis and treatment of the broad spectrum of
human malignancies. Our aim is
to teach clinical and research excellence to and demonstrate the
fundamentals of care of patients with cancer. The teaching emphasis
is on prevention, diagnosis,
treatment and follow-up of the common solid malignancies utilizing
a multi-modality approach. The division focuses on cellular and
molecular biology, biochemistry,
pharmacology and pathology, as well as the supporting roles of surgery,
radiology, immunology, neurology, psychology and sociology in the
treatment of patients
with oncological diagnoses.
The
division is an integral part of the Department of Internal Medicine
and collaborates closely with the Division of Surgery, Radiation
Therapy, Veterinary Medicine and the Departments of Biomathematics
and Cellular Biology of The UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. There
also is a close working relationship with the
departments of Surgery, Pathology, Pharmacology and Radiology in
The UT Medical School, and the Department of Biometry of The UT
School of Public Health, as well as with the Positron Diagnostic
and Research Center. These interactions enhance greatly the research,
teaching and patient care activities.
The
division provides both inpatient and ambulatory care services and
consultation services at Hermann and Lyndon B. Johnson General hospitals.
