The Texas Disclosure and Compensation Study: Best Practices for Improving Safety
2010-2013
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
Total award $1 million
PI: Eric Thomas
Project Description
This project seeks to determine how to make disclosure a process that will not only serve individual patients/families, but also take advantage of the patient’s experience to help hospitals learn from errors and improve safety.
Progress and Outcomes
A qualitative pilot project is underway to identify the issues and concerns surrounding disclosure of adverse events among 30 patients, families, doctors, nurses and hospital administrators who have had direct experience with a disclosure of a medical error.
Information from this pilot project will guide a one-day conference of a convened panel of experts, scheduled for the fall 2011, to develop best practice models which can be tested in hospitals.
