Applications to the Internal Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics residency training programs will only be accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Paper applications will not be considered. Applicant must include letters of recommendation (LoR) from your medicine chair (AND Pediatrics chair for Medicine/Pediatrics applicants) plus two other letters from full time members of faculty, one of whom supervised you on a clinical rotation. UPPER LEVEL applicants must send a LoR from your program director plus the two other letters.
International Medical Graduates need to meet the following requirements: ECFMG Certificate, must be registered in the Match, minimum USMLE STEP I and II scores of 85, and six months of clinical experience in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. We support J-1 visas.
Aside from the COMLEX, all applicants with a degree of DO need to take USMLE exams.
We participate in the National Resident Matching Program and do not offer out-of-Match positions.
General Program Information
The following is general information regarding the Internal Medicine Residency Program for the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School at Houston for the 2009/2010 academic year. |

1. We plan to accept approximately: |

38 PGY-1 positions in the 3-year Categorical program |
2. PGY-1 residents accepted into the Preliminary program will rotate through the same services as the categorical PGY-1 residents. |
|
3. Residents in the combined Medicine/Pediatrics program will rotate six months per year on Medicine rotations and six months on Pediatric rotations. PGY-1 residents rotate in three month cycles, alternating Medicine and Pediatrics. Upper-level residents switch every three months. |

4. The distribution of clinical duties within the PGY-1 year is projected as follows: |
|
|
* 3 weeks of vacation per year: two weeks chosen by the intern and one week of which is unpaid for interns and is 6/24/10-6/30/10. The program provides a 4 day break for the holiday of choice. |
5. Night call: |

Every 4th night on General Internal Medicine at Memorial Hermann and LBJ |
|
Emergency Room shifts are 11 hours with two days off per week. |
6. Conferences include weekly Grand Rounds, Clinicopathologic Conference (CPC), Core Curriculum lectures, Friday Noon Conference, and the Chief Medical Resident's Conference at which residents give prepared talks with handouts and bibliographies. |
