How to Apply
Prospective students apply for admission to the Microbiology & Molecular Genetics program through the online application system for our Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. For domestic students applications received before December 5th will receive priority, while the final deadline for applications is January 5th. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their completed application by the priority deadline, as files are reviewed and interviews offered beginning in late December. If you are a US citizen, are a permanent resident, or have received/will receive a degree from a US university, please use the application procedure for domestic students. For international applications the deadline is November 15th.
Promising applicants will be provided with the opportunity to visit Houston in order to meet the program’s faculty and students and to learn more about the MMG program, the Houston scientific community, and life in the Houston area. Students are admitted for the Fall semester of the following year.
We invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, or national origin. We encourage candidates to contact any of the program faculty with inquiries regarding the program or specific research interests.
Application Materials
Please indicate Microbiology and Molecular Genetics as one of your areas of interest to ensure that MMG faculty will review your application. The application is available online at http://www.uthouston.edu/gsbs/future-students/admissions/requirements/ and requires:
1: Basic biographical information.
2: GRE general test score. We will consider your application with a self-reported score, however we eventually need an official score report. Although not required, we will also consider a score of a subject test. The institutional code for our graduate school is 6907
3: A personal statement describing your background, research experience and motivation for applying to graduate school .The online application will ask you to upload this personal statement.
4: Your CV or resume which should include academic honors, awards received in college, employment history, internships, summer research programs, education history, etc.
5: Unofficial transcripts.
6: Contact information for three individuals who can write you a letter of recommendation. These individuals should be familiar with your potential in a research career.
7: International students also need to submit a TOEFL score. We will consider your application with a self-reported score, however, we eventually need an official score report.
