Fellowship Programs

The Department of Neurology offers fellowships in the areas of Clinical Neurophysiology/EMG track, Clinical Neurophysiology/Epilepsy track, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, and Vascular Neurology.

Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

The Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship is directed by Dr. Parveen Athar and is ACGME accredited. The fellowship has an available EMG track and an Epilepsy track. The Epilepsy track is headed by Dr. Jeremy Slater. Fellows will have training in the following areas: electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), intraoperative monitoring (IOM), sleep medicine (elective), magnetoencephalography (elective), and inpatient epilepsy monitoring (Epilepsy track only). Movement Disorders Fellowship

The two-year Movement Disorders fellowship is directed by Dr. Mya Schiess. The Movement Disorders fellowship is one of the fastest growing training programs in the department. Fellows will be required to learn effective medical intervention for symptomatic treatment and to learn the best medical management for the major movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, the dystonias, spasticity regardless of etiology, tremors, Huntington’s, tics, Wilson’s disease, atypical parkinsonism, multiple system atrophies, progressive supranuclear palsy, the ataxia syndromes, and primary and secondary paroxysmal dyskinesias and myoclonus states. Fellows will also be required to have an understanding of the basic science of research in movement disorders, as well as demonstrate an ability to teach residents and students. Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship

The Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Houston (UT Health) MS Research Group provides 1 to 2 years of advanced training in the diagnosis, treatment and clinical and basic research of patients with immune-mediated disorders of the central nervous system. Vascular Neurology Fellowship

The two-year Vascular Neurology fellowship is directed by Dr. Sean Savitz. The first year of the Vascular Neurology fellowship is ACGME accredited and the second year is a research fellowship. Fellows will have training in the full spectrum of cerebrovascular disease from clinical care to clinical research to laboratory science. The fellowship program focuses on the development of the clinician scientist who will dedicate their careers to investigating the pathophysiology and epidemiology of cerebrovascular disease and the application of this knowledge to therapeutic advances.
