Neurocritical Care Fellowship

Mischer Neuroscience Institute and UTHealth offers a two-year neurocritical care fellowship for applicants who are board certified or eligible in Neurology, Neuro-surgery, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia or Internal Medicine.

Goals and Objective

The 32-bed Neuroscience and Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit is located at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center. The University of Texas Medical School at Houston partners with Memorial Hermann Hospital System and the Mischer Neuroscience Institute, the largest and most comprehensive program of its kind in the area, to provide patient care for the busiest LifeFlight program in the country, as well as the first joint commissioned certified comprehensive stroke center in Texas. Our multidisciplinary program is staffed with intensivists of diverse backgrounds collaborating in a high acuity patient care environment. Our neurocritical care program is not a consultant-model. We take care of all neurosurgical emergency cases from the admission to discharge as the primary team in charge of the patients.

Clinical Duties

The training curriculum is specifically designed to train physicians with a strong base in general critical care and a special emphasis in neurocritical care. Fellows will be required to rotate through the medical, surgical/trauma, and cardiovascular ICUs and will be trained in performing all ICU procedures including endotracheal intubations, tracheostomies, bronchoscopy, both invasive and semi-invasive hemodyanamic monitoring, and advanced ICU sonography. Our unit is equipped with multimodality monitoring capability including ICP, CPP, continuous video EEG monitoring, continuous cardiac output with SjvO2 monitoring as well as country’s first use of the latest model of digitalized brain oxymetry (PbtO2) monitors connected to the patient bedside monitoring. The educational environment is highly research-oriented, and protected time will be provided along with mentorship to prepare for an academic neurointensivist career. Applicants must be board certified/eligible in Neurology, Neuro-surgery, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, or Internal Medicine.

Program Description

We offer two fellowship positions every year and participate in the San Francisco Match. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply 1–2 years prior to the anticipated year of fellowship training.
