Fourth Year Electives
The Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston offers several clinical electives that are open to fourth year students in domestic and foreign medical schools.
The elective rotation is generally designed for the fourth year medical student who has decided to become a neurosurgeon and considers the elective time as preparation for a career in neurosurgery. The elective is specifically tailored to complement his/her future career goals.
An elective rotation is highly recommended for students interested in applying to The University of Texas Medical School at Houston Neurosurgery Residency Program.
We offer the following fourth year electives:
- Adult Neurosurgery (NSUR 4001)
- Neuro-Critical Care (NSUR 4002)
- Pediatric Neurosurgery (NSUR 4003)
More information can be found in the 2012–2013 Fourth Year Elective Catalog.
A formal application must be filed through VSAS (Visiting Student Application Service) and will be processed through The University of Texas Medical School at Houston Student Affairs office. However, decisions on those applications cannot be formalized until May 1st.
More information regarding the elective application process at our institution can be found at the VSAS website.
Within our department, we will make an “informal” schedule to facilitate date planning for those students interested in visiting us. However, all applications must be finalized and accepted through VSAS to be official.
If you would like to apply and be given preliminary approval for the dates of your rotation, please email Brooke Beasley, the Program Coordinator. Please write VISITING STUDENT CLERKSHIP in the subject line and include the following in the body of the email:
- Medical school
- Expected date of graduation
- Three choices of dates for your rotation listed in the order you prefer

- Any questions you may have
Please note that all rotations begin on Monday and last for four weeks.
