The Vivian L. Smith Foundation Connection
The Vivian L. Smith Foundation for Neurologic Research has provided continued support and encouragement to the department since 1996.
The Vivian L. Smith Foundation for Neurologic Research has a long history of supporting projects and research that will enhance the quality of life of those afflicted with neurologic disease. Its affiliation with the Department of Neurosurgery began with then-department chair Dr. Guy Clifton, who is now a member of the Foundation’s board, and continues today with department chair Dr. Dong Kim.
The relationship between the Foundation and the Department of Neurosurgery carries on the vision of founder Vivian L. Smith to develop new therapies and improved outcomes to better patients' lives.
Always supportive of collaborative efforts, the Foundation recognized the innovative clinical applications of the research conducted in the department. The Foundation's support has allowed the department to recruit and retain several outstanding scientists to the department, enabling them to commit the time and resources necessary to see their ideas through to becoming successfully competitive for outside funding and advancing neuroscience. The Foundation also has funded the Neurosciences Research Repository to help benefit all of the department’s researchers.
On Aug. 12, 2010, the UT System Board of Regents paid tribute to the Foundation by approving the renaming of the department as the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery, recognizing the significant contributions and unique commitment the Vivian L. Smith Foundation has made to this Medical School department.
