The Division of Child & Adolescent Neurology has faculty who are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders affecting neonates, children and adolescents. Individual faculty also have specific expertise in a variety of neurological disorders of children requiring comprehensive management.

Dr. Ian J. Butler is a Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He received his medical degree from the University of Adelaide and trained in Pediatrics at Adelaide Children’s Hospital in South Australia and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Butler completed his residency in Pediatric Neurology at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street in London and the University of Wales in Cardiff, United Kingdom and a fellowship in Pediatric Neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Butler is board certified in Neurology with special competence in Pediatric Neurology and is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

- Neuromuscular Disorders in Children

Dr. Pedro Mancias is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he also received his medical degree. He obtained his pediatric residency training at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and completed his fellowship training in Pediatric Neurology and Neuromuscular Disorders at UT Medical School at Houston. Dr. Mancias is board certified in Neurology with special competence in Child Neurology and also in Clinical Neurophysiology.

Richard E. Frye, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.P.
Dr. Richard E. Frye is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his Pediatric residency at the University of Miami and Child Neurology residency at Children’s Hospital Boston. Following residency training, Dr. Frye completed a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology and Learning Disabilities at Children’s Hospital in Boston. He received a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University and a M.S. in Biomedical Science from Drexel University. Dr. Frye is board certified in Pediatrics and Neurology with special competence in Child Neurology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is also funded by the National Institutes of Health to study brain function in individuals with dyslexia.

Dr. Mary Kay Koenig is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She received her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and trained in Pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. Koenig completed a fellowship in Pediatric Neurology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and joined the faculty in the Division of Child and Adolescent Neurology in 2007.
Dr. Koenig’s areas of specialty care include:

- Mitochondrial Disorders
- Tuberous Sclerosis
- Neurogenetic Disorders
- Neurometabolic Disorders
Dr. Gretchen Von Allmen is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Child and Adolescent Neurology, and is the Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She received her medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta, and completed residency training in Child Neurology at Northwestern University in Chicago. After residency training, she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Epilepsy at the University of Chicago, and a fellowship in Neurophysiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She is board certified in Neurology with special qualification in Child Neurology, and is board eligible in Neurophysiology.
Dr. Von Allmen has clinical expertise in the areas of:
- Pediatric Epilepsy and Intractable Epilepsy
- EEG and Prolonged Video-EEG Monitoring
- Non-medical treatments for Epilepsy including Epilepsy Surgery, Vagal Nerve Stimulation and Ketogenic Diet
- Malformations of Cortical Development and other Brain Malformations.
