The Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of all children, adolescents and adults.

Book Money:
The Pediatrics department provides Med-Peds residents with $65.00 per year to use towards purchasing medicine or pediatric textbooks. PREP guide with questions are provided annually free of charge in preparation for boards. Internal medicine does not provide a book fund. However, they furnish MKSAP online which includes questions and answers in preparation for boards.
Vacations:
Vacation time must be shared equally within both departments:
PGY-1: 1 week of vacation is granted from pediatrics and 1 week of vacation is granted from medicine. At the completion of PGY-1 year, 1 week of vacation is provided prior to commencing PGY-2.

PGY-2: 3 weeks of vacation are provided which can be split into 10 days and 11 days which can be taken on either medicine or pediatrics respectively.

PGY-3: 3 weeks of vacation are provided which can be split into 10 days and 11 days which can be taken on either medicine or pediatrics respectively.

PGY-4: 3 weeks of vacation are provided which can be split into 10 days and 11 days which can be taken on either medicine or pediatrics respectively.
Sick Leave:
Each resident is entitled to 12 working days per contract year with a rollover cap of 30 working days.
Educational Leave:
Each resident is entitled to 5 working days per contract year to attend an educational meeting.

Services and Support Groups:
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston offers many services to assist you during your residency and/or fellowship training program. Family Work/Life Program: This program offers assistance in balancing a resident's work and personal lives through a variety of services. Additional specific information is available at their website. Child Development Center: The Child Development Center is designed to create a safe wholesome environment where children enjoy living and learning. A nurturing creative atmosphere conducive to fostering a balance of each child's social, physical, intellectual and emotional development is provided. Individuality is recognized and used as a base on which to encourage children to reach their maximum potential. Employee Assistance Program: The program offers services to help residents resolve problems in their personal lives that may affect performance in their Programs. Refer to the EAP website for specific services available. Recreation Center: The UTHSC-H Recreation Center offers a wide variety of quality facilities, equipment, and programs designed for health and fitness, as well as for fun and relaxation. Membership is open to all UT students, faculty, staff and families and affiliates, including Texas Medical Center institutions and UT Alumni.
Chief Residents:
The UT Med/Peds program director and faculty select two fourth year residents to serve as chief residents. These are individuals who have not only excelled clinically but who also displays strong leadership, communication, humanistic and interpersonal skills. The chiefs coordinate Med/Peds board review sessions, the intern switch party, and other social gatherings and serve as liasions between both departments.
