Program Information
The Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of all children, adolescents and adults.
The Medicine-Pediatrics program is designed to provide a balanced but consistently challenging curriculum for our residents. Residents work along side their categorical colleagues as well as dedicated months with other medicine-pediatrics residents/attendings. Switches are generally every three months however residents have the freedom to individualize their curriculum. Our intern year is 12 months with only 1 month of the 2nd year as a supervisory month to allow our residents time to adjust to upper-level roles
During the PGY-1 Year, learning the basic skills of inpatient medicine/pediatrics is the emphasis of the year. At this time closely supervised interns work with upper level residents to develop diagnosis and management skills to serve as a foundation for their training. All interns participate on our unique and popular Med-Peds Ward team. They are paired with a 4th year Med-Peds resident and Med-Peds attending. The goal of this month is to provide mentorship and experience with integrating the care of both adult and pediatric patients.
During the PGY-2 year, house officers spend significant time with consult services and in intensive care settings to develop targeted clinical skills while still being supported by the faculty. Elective time is available for residents to individualize their education. Residents begin acting in supervisory rolls on internal medicine.
During the PGY-3 year residents are again given elective time to individualize their education. Many of our residents create combined electives that involve both internal medicine and pediatric focuses. Also, during this year, many of our residents participate in various research projects with our faculty mentors. General experience focuses on ward supervisory months and outpatient medicine.
During the PGY-4 year, senior residents broaden their experience through supervisory roles and elective rotations. They enjoy a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences and collegial interaction with faculty and community-based physicians. They serve as supervisors in the ER and play an active role in teaching interns and co-residents. All PGY-4s are required to present an in-depth Senior Resident Seminar in both Medicine and Pediatrics. Research is an important focus for the UT-Houston faculty. Housestaff are encouraged to participate with a faculty mentor in projects in which they are interested.

Medicine Subspecialty Consults include Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Rhuematology, Pulmonary, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Hematology/Oncology, and Infectious Dieseases. They are a mixture of in-patient/out-patient experiences and can be done at Hermann, LBJ, St. Lukes, or MD Anderson
Continuity Clinics:
Each of our Medicine/Pediatrics residents has their own continuity clinic that they attend weekly. Clinics are on the same half day each week, and are morning or afternoon. Residents alternate between medicine and pediatrics weekly. Clinics are at either at LBJ hospital, the Hermann Professional Building, or in the community and residents choose to work with either Med-Peds trained faculty or dedicated outpatient internist or pediatricians. Residents share clinics with other Med-Peds residents of different training levels as well as categorical residents. Patients are a mixture of insured and uninsured and sprawl across all socioeconomic levels. Residents are encouraged to bring patients/babies they cared for in the hospital to their continuity clinic. Residents are closely supervised their intern year and act independently towards they end of their training years.
Didactic Education:
Med-Peds residents attend the morning reports, noon conferences, and journal clubs for the categorical disciplines they are on that month. In addition, once a month, med-peds residents come together for combined noon conferences, journal clubs and board review sessions. Once a year all residents are required to take the individual in-service training exams for internal medicine and pediatrics. Performance is tracked during residency and assistance is offered early in training for those who need further preparation. In addition, the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics provides each resident with MKSAP and PREP materials.
