Clinical Rotation Goals

Rotation Goals
Orientation The new fellows have a four-week orientation program at the beginning of fellowship.  During orientation they have a series of introductory lectures.  They also participate in observorships on the clinical rotations with limited patient care responsibilities.  New fellows will also spend dedicated time with the Neonatal Transport Team.  This Team is highly specialized in the transport of critically ill neonates who require advanced life support and advanced level of care. The fellow will participate in the pre-transport assessment and phone management of selected infants transferred to Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in addition to participating in the transport of the most critically ill patients.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit The neonatal intensive care training includes eleven one-month rotations in the neonatal intensive care units of the program. The fellow has an opportunity to learn skills in collaborative management of high-risk perinatal cases, as well as management of neonates with a variety of complex illnesses from admission to discharge. The fellow will participate in family care conferences and multidisciplinary discharge planning meetings. Night coverage is provided by housestaff and neonatal nurse practitioners, backed up by in-house neonatal fellows and in-house neonatal faculty.
Follow-up and MFM Clinics These rotations are conducted at the outpatient clinics of Memorial Hermann Hospital and LBJ Hospital. The Neonatal Follow-up Program assesses the medical, nutritional, neurologic, developmental and psychosocial needs of the preterm and other high-risk infants post-discharge. The specialized staff has extensive experience in addressing the ongoing needs of families faced with caring for their medically complex infants. The fellow will be involved in neonatal follow-up, periodic developmental assessments of discharged infants, and multidisciplinary discharge rounds during this month. During this month, the fellow will also spend time in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Clinic, under the direction of the MFM faculty.  They will participate in antepartum assessment and counseling sesssions to develop and appreciation of the capabilities, challenges, and limitations of antepartum assessment.
