  1. Applications for PGY-1 resident positions are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application System ("ERAS").
  2. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated on the basis of educational background, academic performance, United States Medical Licensing Exam ("USMLE") scores, extracurricular activities, research experience, and letters of recommendation.  Applicants will be be invited to interview based on this assessment.
  3. A personal interview is required to be considered for a residency position.  Interviews take place between November and January for the next year's class.
  4. The Pediatric Residency Program evaluates interviewees based on educational background, academic performance, USMLE scores, extracurricular activities, research experience, and personal characteristics as evidenced by their personal statement, letters of recommendation, Dean's letter, and their interviews.
  5. Applicants are ranked and the rank list is sent to the National Residency Matching Program ("NRMP").  Pediatric residents at a PGY-1 level are taken through the NRMP match process only.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the Pediatric Residency Program:
  2. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education ("LCME").
  3. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association ("AOA").
  4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  5. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet the following qualifications:
  1. Have a currently valid certificate from the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates ("ECFMG"). 
  2. Have notarized copies of all documents required by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners ("TSBME") for an Institutional Permit.  These documents include:
  • Notarized copy of medical school diploma.
  • Notarized copy of certified transcript with grades or marks from each medical school attended.  A description of specific course work may be necessary if course titles are different from courses required by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners (TSBME).
  • Notarized copy of a certification by the Dean of the medical school of the applicant's graduation from medical school.
  • Notarized copy of a valid ECFMG document or 5th Pathway certificate.  If ECFMG document valid, through dates must be stamped at the bottom, or can be validated indefinitely, or can have current interim document.
  • Copy of USMLE scores.
  • A Marriage Certificate is required if there is a name change in your documents. A legal court document is required if a legal name change has occurred.
  • Graduates of offshore, non-LCME accredited institutions must meet the same requirements as graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada. An applicant will be considered for interview only after he/she provides the above information.

Required Documents

The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners (TSBME) requires the following documents for institutional licensure in the state of Texas. You must bring the original documents and one set of 8-1/2 inch by 11-inch photocopies that are notarized as "true copies of the original."

Please remember that in order to be considered for a residency or
clinical fellowship position, all of these requirements must be met
before a program can either rank you or offer you a position.

  1. Medical School diploma. You must present the original and a certified translation if the diploma is not in English.
  2. Medical School transcript. You must present the original along with a certified translation if the transcript is not in English. The transcript must show actual grades obtained in medical school (i.e. marks, statement sheets).
  3. Separate transcript of Medical School clerkships showing actual hours.
  4. Medical School Dean's Letter. You must present the original and a certified translation if the letter is not in English.
  5. Valid ECFMG certificate. The certificate must be valid indefinitely.
  6. If there is a change of name from that on the documents, you must present a marriage certificate or legal name change document, along with a certified translation if the document is not in English.
  7. Photo identification (passport), plus resident alien card if applicable.
  8. Graduates from German medical schools will additionally need to provide their four exam results:
    --- Arztliche Vorprufung
    --- Ersten Abschnitt Prufung
    --- Zweiten Abschnitt Prufung
    --- Arztliche Prufung

If any documents are not in the English language, you must furnish an official, word-for-word translation of each document. A translation is defined as one that a government official, official translation agency, or college or university official performs. It must be printed or written on the official letterhead or stationery of that official agency. The translator must certify that it is a true translation to the best of his or her knowledge, that he or she is fluent in the language, and that he or she is qualified to translate original documents. The translator must sign his or her name and place their title under the signature.

Certified copies: Notarized photocopies certifying that these are true copies of the original documents. The notary must sign each document.
