About Dr. Castillo

Dr. Castillo joined the Spinal Cord Injury Program at TIRR in June 2006. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the New York Medical College of Medicine in 1996. He pursued a Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship here at TIRR from 1996-1998. After his fellowship, he joined the Spinal Cord Injury Service at the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System in Dallas. He was an Assistant Professor in the PM&R Department at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Aside from staff physician in the Spinal Cord Injury Service, Dr. Castillo was the chairman of the Quality Improvement Committee for the SCI service and a voting member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Castillo received his medical degree from the University of the East Ramon Magsaydsay Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines. He completed his transitional year medicine internship at the Seton Hall Program in St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark New Jersey. He is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. He recently achieved certification to practice Acupuncture in the State of Texas.

  • Heterotopic ossification
  • Acupuncture

Research Interests:

  • Integrating Acupuncture in spinal cord medicine particularly on neuropathic pain and spasticity Ideal vs. practical management and the treatment options for neurogenic bladder
  • Current seating system evaluation for patients with spinal cord injury - is there a better way?

Teaching Activities

  • Spinal Cord Injury medicine lectures to SCI fellows, PM&R residents, Medical Students and the TIRR Memorial Hermann ancillary staff.
  • Provide lectures on a variety of topics in spinal cord injury medicine to other organizsations in the city that care for people with disability.
  • Participate as a lecturer at the Annual Baylor College of Medicine-The University of Texas Alliance Board Review Course.
