In 1977, cell phones, e-mail, and personal computers were not a part of daily life—and procedures such as laparoscopic kidney donation were not even conceived. But on May 22 of that year, the Division opened its doors to the critically ill and their needs, and has scarcely slowed down a day since. In the space of a year, it multiplied 6-fold to a 26-bed facility. Division doctors performed 32 transplants—almost double the number (18) that had been done in the entire city of Houston the year before."
