Biography

Stephen M. Katz, M.D.Dr. Katz is a native Texan, born and educated, attending the University of Texas-Austin, and training at Baylor College of Medicine where he received his graduate degree. He completed his surgical residency at Pittsburgh, beginning his career at UT-Houston in 1989 in the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation, where he now serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Katz presently focuses on pancreas transplantation, live-donor laparoscopic nephrectomy, and is the primary pediatric kidney transplant surgeon for the Division. His bibliography contains nearly 40 published articles and three book chapters.

The big advantage to the laparoscopic procedure, in general, is it’s less invasive. You go through much less muscle. With the open nephrectomy, you really have to go through quite a bit of muscle going through the flank and that really slows patients down as far as recovery goes."
