Biography

Jacqueline Lappin, M.D.Dr. Jacqueline Lappin completed post-graduate medical education at Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. Lappin was a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her preliminary general surgery residency at The Medical Center of Delaware and a general surgery residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.Dr. Lappin performed her transplant fellowship within the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

She joined the team in October 2003 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. She has re-joined with the renal transplant team in 2007 after practicing at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Having spent some time in the University of Minnesota with Dr Sutherland (who pioneered solid organ pancreas transplantation) she hopes to expand the pancreas program here at UT, with particular emphasis on the combined use of live kidney and deceased donor pancreas transplantation and for patients with normal renal function pancreas transplants alone. It is so satisfying to see what Pancreas transplantation alone or in combination with kidney transplantation can do to alter the quality of life for these patients – patients who maybe couldn’t be alone because of hypoglycemic unawareness, patients who now have a chance to slow down or delay the consequences of poor glucose control. There are many challenges with pancreas transplantation – it’s not just about getting good one year graft survival it’s also about monitoring the patients to maintain good graft function – and this requires lots of teamwork.
