Biography

Dr. Charles Van Buren began his career in nutrition research, doing his residency in general surgery at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, where he worked with the physicians who did the initial work in transplantation between identical twins, including Nobel Prize winner Dr. Joseph Murray. He came to the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation in 1977 to expand his experience in organ transplantation and add a new dimension to the Division's research efforts, nutritional immunology. As a surgeon, Dr. Van Buren performed the first liver transplant in Houston in 1985. Dr. Van Buren currently serves as Professor of Surgery, Director of the Division, and Medical Director of LifeGift.
