Message from Tyrone Rodriguez, SIC President
Dear UTHSC-H Students,
A year of change is upon us. We face transitions as construction changes our campus, the Supreme court has ruled in favor of diversity, and our academic climate is impacted by state budgetary shortfalls. This year the Student InterCouncil (SIC) will promote diversity, grow its scope of service, and work for delivering greater student representation on important issues. In having the opportunity of working with fantastic student leaders from all six University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H) schools, I will encourage the SIC to not only serve the student body but our community as a whole.
Our core of student officers: Steven Kry (GSBS), Deepak Sagaram (SHIS), Christy Marshall (MS), and Tison Price (SON) represent the highest attributes in leadership, creativity, and initiative. Additionally, it is an honor for me to serve with dynamic and passionate individuals at the state level, UT-Student Advisory Council, representing UTHSC-H students: Jennifer Brannan (GSBS), Manny Reyes (MS), and Jeremy Chance (DB) Chairman.
The year ahead is full of promise as the SIC forges to deliver exciting social events, community service projects, the return of the student Health Care competition, current topics interesting students in our electronic News and Views, a soon to be implemented dynamic website, and further opportunities for scholarship available to student groups and individual students. Please allow me to welcome you all or should I say y'all to an exciting 2003-2004 year as your new Student InterCouncil President.
Very Sincerely,
Tyrone F. Rodriguez

Salutation 2003
Salutation, the Student InterCouncil's annual welcome event for new students, was held on September 9th at the Hornberger Conference Center on Holcombe. Students who attended had the opportunity to register to vote in Harris County, meet new students from different schools, mingle with the deans, enjoy a traditional Texas-style BBQ dinner and even do a little dancing. The deans gave "State of the School" addresses, and the SIC officers for 2003-2004 were introduced. If you missed out on all the fun of Salutation, don't fret, because the SIC hosts several social events throughout the year. Watch News & Views, and your email, for future events!
SIC Registers New Voters
In addition to registering voters at Salutation, the Student InterCouncil held a Voter Registration Drive on October 1st at the McGovern Commons Building. Through their efforts, the SIC was able to register and update voter information for nearly 50 voters. Although it's too late to register for the November Mayoral Election, it's never too late to register! Go to http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/index.shtml for more information. And remember, in the words of author and former California state legislator Tom Hayden "A silent majority and government by the people is incompatible."
GSBS Students Clean Up Houston
The students at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences are the proud parents of Fannin! The GSBS students adopted the street, between Holcombe and N. McGregor, as part of the "Keep Houston Beautiful" Clean Neighborhoods program. On October 2nd, the students held their first cleanup. The students started at opposite ends of Fannin, and by the time the met in the middle, they had picked up 6 bags of trash, including several hubcaps, a couple of chicken bones, nuts, bolts, wires and approximately 7 million cigarette butts. It's a safe bet that if any of these students catches you tossing a cigarette butt onto Fannin in the future, they will have some words for you! The GSBS students implore you to do your part to help keep Houston beautiful - after all, this is your home now!
