Strategic Planning & Institutional Analysis

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
Strategic Directions 2007-2013

Strategic Direction 1
Educate health professionals and scientists in a diverse and interdisciplinary academic community

Objective 2
Enhance student recruitment and retention programs

The State of Texas has pledged to “Close the Gaps” in higher education participation and success. Part of this pledge entails enhancing the diversity of the student body and ensuring student success through the provision of both adequate financial aid and proven retention programs.

  • Building on recent, successful RWJF, HRSA-HCOE, CANDO, and THECB grant awards (roughly $3 million total), secure additional extramural support for recruitment and retention programs to augment current funding levels.
  • As part of a new comprehensive philanthropic program, seek donor support for scholarships and fellowships (please refer to Attachment D).
  • Make demonstrable progress toward meeting the health science center’s Closing the Gaps participation and success goals related to student diversity. (please refer to the Institutional Diversity Plan prepared in Fall 2002 as well as Attachment A-5 from Fact Book 2006

A Strategic Action Plan for Diversity is currently in development.
