The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
Strategic Directions 2007-2013

Strategic Direction 4
Model appropriate, culturally sensitive, and compassionate clinical care

Objective 1
Maintain a fiscally sound clinical practice that supports the academic mission of the health science center

  • The faculty practice is to operate in support of the academic mission of the Medical School.
  • The faculty practice is to be financially self-sustaining with the expectation of a positive financial margin each year. If this goal is in jeopardy, then appropriate financial and managerial adjustments will be made.
  • The faculty practice is to strive to be the premier multi-specialty group practice in the greater Houston area and beyond as it relates to education and research.
  • The faculty practice is to strive to improve the payer mix through expansion of outpatient activities and attraction of private patients as it relates to education and research.

The Faculty Practice Plan (MSRDP) is a multidisciplinary group practice of the Medical School faculty involving more than 600 physicians and representing 17 clinical departments of the Medical School. UT Physicians is a non-profit, physician corporation affiliated with the practice plan of the Medical School . The UT faculty practice provides full inpatient and outpatient services, not only through the group practice, but also through affiliations with several Texas Medical Center hospitals and institutions. The health science center has primary affiliations with the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System for activities primarily at Memorial Hermann Hospital (MHH) and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and with the Harris County Hospital District (HCHD) for activities at the Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital (LBJ) and several community clinics. The health science center operates and provides psychiatric services at the Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC). Affiliated Medical Services (AMS) is a Texas-certified non-profit health corporation formed by the health science center and Baylor College of Medicine. AMS contracts with the HCHD to provide physician services from both schools. Medical School faculty were responsible for the following volume of patient days: 209,063 at MHH, 66,097 at LBJ, and 62,589 at HCPC. FY 2005 Medical School outpatient clinical activity is estimated at 914,903 encounters at a wide range of clinic sites.

At the end of FY 2005, the MSRDP recorded gross charges of $472,729,806, total operating revenues of $198,428,805, and total operating expenses of $197,707,636. Net assets at the end of FY 2005 were $ 38,339,278.
