Charles T. Van Buren, MD
Professor of Surgery and Director of the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Medical Director: LifeGift; Renal Transplantation - Memorial Hermann Hospital - TMC.
Dr. Charles Van Buren began his career in nutrition research, doing his residency in general surgery at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, where he worked with the physicians who did the initial work in transplantation between identical twins, including Nobel Prize winner Dr. Joseph Murray. He came to the Division of Immunology and Organ Transplantation in 1977 to expand his experience in organ transplantation and add a new dimension to the Division's research efforts, nutritional immunology. As a surgeon, Dr. Van Buren performed the first liver transplant in Houston in 1985. Dr. Van Buren currently serves as Professor of Surgery, Director of the Division, and Medical Director of LifeGift OPO. Dr. Van Buren is also Medical Director of the Organ Transplant Center at Memorial Hermann - TMC.
