Educational Award Program
for Children of Classified Employees
The University
Classified Staff Council (UCSC) has established this educational award
program for children of classified employees. The employee must
currently be employed at The University of Texas Health Science Center
at Houston. The UCSC Educational Award Committee administers the annual UCSC
Educational Award Program The purpose is to identify and honor high school
students and to aid as many as possible.
Who is eligible?
High school
students who are about to begin their college careers and are children
or legal dependents of full-time UTHSC-H classified employees are eligible to
compete for this award.
Each
award recipient must either enter an accredited U.S. college the
following fall semester as a full-time student and pursue a course of
study leading to either an associate of arts or baccalaureate degree or
enter an accredited technical school. The letter of acceptance from an
accredited U.S. college is required when the application is submitted.
How are winners selected?
All UCSC Educational Award recipient(s)
will be chosen from submitted award applications. Any son
or daughter of a classified employee of The University of Texas
Health Science Center at Houston who will be leaving high school
should submit a completed application by March 27th. The status
of the UTHSC-H employee will be verified before application will
be considered by the Educational Award Committee.

An impartial
committee (5 members) comprised of UCSC member(s), classified staff and
other qualified members will select the recipient(s) by evaluating each
eligible student's application, grades, letters of reference, and one
page essay to include why you want to attend college/technical school,
course of study and career goals.
Applications will be judged on:
- Preparedness to begin college or technical school
- Evidence of prior scholastic achievement
- Clearly-stated educational objectives and career goals
- Evidence of volunteerism or activism at the school or
community level
Award recipient(s) will be selected without regard to
financial need, and will be notified as soon as the decision is made
What is the amount of the award?
The stipend of each UTHSC-H award will be a one-time
payment determined by the UCSC Educational Award Committee.
What are my obligations and responsibilities if I
win?
The award
recipient(s) is required to submit a letter of acceptance of the award,
proof of college/technical school acceptance prior to the disbursement.
The UCSC award recipient(s) is responsible for making admission
arrangements and fulfilling all requirements of the school chosen. The
college, university or technical school must be accredited and located
in the United States. The winner must enter college or technical school
as a full-time student in the fall term following selection.
The award
recipient (s) is expected to make normal academic progress. While honor
grades are not required, award winners have a responsibility to
do quality work.
Who handles the award procedures?
All phases of
the competition, including selection of recipient(s), determination of
the amount of the award stipends and payment of stipend(s) for
award(s) are handled by the UCSC Educational Award Committee. All
decisions of the Committee are final.
Requirements of students applying for an award
- SAT score
- GPA (must be on a 4.0 scale)
- Completed application
- Two letters of references from a professional (i.e.,
teacher, counselor, employer)
- High school transcript
- One page essay, double-spaced, on your career goals and how
this award would benefit you
- A record or description of volunteerism, extra curricular or activism at the
school or community level.
- A copy of a letter of acceptance from an accredited school
