An Overview from the Program Director - O. LENAINE WESTNEY, M.D.

O. LENAINE WESTNEY, M.D.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the urology residency program at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. We take great pride in the accomplishments of our residency program since the establishment of our school 33 years ago. This brief introduction will try and give you some sense of the scope of the residency-training program.

Our program is in the heart of the largest medical center in the world. This provides us with an immense amount of resources with which to train residents. We have quite a diversity in clinical experience, which is available to the residents. Our rotations include the university hospital at which a broad range of cases are seen. We also have extended rotations at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This is one of the largest comprehensive care cancer centers in the United States and is rated as the #1 Cancer Hospital in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Our teaching hospitals include a large county hospital as one of the main teaching rotations. This provides ample opportunities for the resident to be more involved in the decision making process with very complex urologic problems.

The UTMS-H urology residency program is fully accredited by the residency review committee for urology of the ACGME. In order to gain such approval, we must meet certain standards spelled out by these governing bodies. These include providing an equitable wage and benefits package. We also provide a scholarly environment for our residents with readily accessible library and on-line computer facilities. We have a didactic curriculum, consisting of basic science and clinical topics, and faculty members who are leaders in their field. We provide residents with sufficient breadth and depth of pre-operative, operative, and post-operative experience in order to prepare them for certification as diplomats of the American Board of Urology. However, we try to go beyond our obligation providing them with the essentials to meet the requirements of the RRC and the ACGME as well as those for board certification. Our main goal is to train all of our residents to be both excellent surgeons and physicians. For this to occur, we seek residency applicants who are of the highest integrity and dedication. We also seek residents who have excelled in Medical School and have the capability to master all of the intricacies of a complex and ever-changing urologic practice.

We believe our program offers tremendous opportunities to our residents. We excel in the areas of female urology, voiding dysfunction/neurourology, oncology, minimally invasive surgery, erectile dysfunction and pediatric urology. Our combined full-time faculty at the UTMS-H and M.D. Anderson are one of the largest in the country. This depth provides us with advantages in clinical practice and research. Our graduating residents have the background to succeed in whichever endeavor they choose, academic or private practice. We thank you for your inquiry about our training program. We are pleased to have this opportunity to introduce to you our program and hope that you will strongly consider completing your urology residency training here in Houston.
