SOP: Standard Operating Procedure

Official UT HSC SOP on Shutting Down Personal Computers

from Richard L. Miller, Vice President and Interim Chief Information Officer

as of Friday, June 24, 2005

  1. Personal computers, in general, should be turned off at the end of the work day, except on Wednesday nights, when automated processes need to be executed on these systems.
  2. Any peripheral equipment, such as monitors and printers, should also be powered down.
  3. Printers which are directly attached to the network (network printers) and not a personal computer should NOT be turned off at any time.
  4. Employees who have a legitimate need to leave their computer equipment on for remote execution, job processing, remote desktop, or other approved processes should leave their system turned on during the evening or weekend hours, as needed or required.
  5. If there is any uncertainty, please contact your departmental or school information technology specialist. If you are not certain who your information technology specialist is, please reference the Help Desk website at http://is.hsc.uth.tmc.edu/css/ or call the information systems help desk at extension 4848.

Notes:

  • Don't turn off someone else's equipment--you don't know why they left it on.
  • Note that even if you need to leave your CPU on, you may be able to turn off your monitor, printer, and other peripherals.
Those are not necessary, for instance, to do the Wednesday night system updates.
  • Until now, the School of Nursing and the Dental Branch have had their updates on a different night than the rest of the system.
This has been changed as of the week of June 27, 2005, to make things uniform across the board.
  • The Energy Rangers thank the following for making this uniform policy happen!

    • Richard L. Miller, VP and Interim CIO
    • Richard L. McDermott, VP Facilities
