| ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | |

Monitors operation schedules and adjusts rooms and staff to ensure operating room time is utilized to maximum efficiency. Interfaces with appropriate hospital staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care services. Recommends new policies and procedures to more effectively utilize available staff and capabilities to ensure best possible patient care. Supervises posting of surgical cases and handles all complaints regarding this area to maximize patients' satisfaction with services. Functions as an assistant to the Medical Director and Department Chairperson to respond to departmental needs as requested. Must be able to respond to emergency situations. |
| DUTIES | |
| Typical........... | The primary function of this position is to serve as an
administrative liaison between Hermann Hospital and the Department of Anesthesiology
and to coordinate anesthesiology services provided to patients at the hospital
by staff of the Health Science Center. As a registered nurse, the incumbent
has the ability to judge which cases require the scheduling of different
types of equipment, staff, and size of operating room. The incumbent does
not, however, administer anesthesia or perform other technical duties.
The Coordinator, Anesthesiology Services is responsible for preparing a daily schedule of operations to be performed, including the type of operation, attending physician, operating room location, anesthesia staff assigned, and method of anesthesia to be used. All cases must be scheduled appropriately according to rooms, service, equipment and surgeons. Due to the nature of the department's activities, scheduling changes may occur for various reasons and must be dealt with quickly and in a highly efficient manner due to the high risk factor involved from the patient care aspect. Changes in patient readiness for operation, priority operations, and emergencies contribute to scheduling changes which create a fast-paced atmosphere. Incumbent is expected to make immediate decisions in this regard which could impact the patient's health and well-being. The incumbent may make decisions regarding surgical scheduling problems or other issues within policies and procedures without submitting them to the supervisor for prior approval. Decisions regarding actions outside established policies and procedures, as well as personnel problems such as inadequate staffing, must be referred to the supervisor for prior approval. The continuing challenge of this position involves the complexities of coordinating operating room schedules for nurses, physicians, and other personnel. May perform other duties as assigned. |

| Received.......... | This position has a dual reporting relationship. The incumbent reports administratively to the Chairperson of the Anesthesiology Department but effectively answers on a daily basis to the Medical Director at Hermann Hospital. |
| Given............. | The incumbent supervises two posting coordinators who are Hermann Hospital personnel, and is required to interface with a number of other hospital personnel such as nurses, physicians, x-ray technicians, and laboratory and respiratory therapy personnel in order to ensure necessary patient care services in the operating room are provided. These include emergency situations such as trauma cases, cardiac arrests, and routine surgeries. The incumbent coordinates the activities of various technicians and laboratory personnel. |

| Required.......... | Bachelor's degree in nursing, current Texas licensure, and at least five years of surgical experience. |
