| DUTIES | |
| Typical........... | Nutritionists are utilized within the Pediatrics Department of the Medical School under a federally funded, state-administered program for women, infants and children (WIC) to treat patients with nutrition deficiencies. The WIC Program serves low income women and children up to five years old by providing nutrition education along with food vouchers to encourage improved nutritional habits. The goal of the WIC program is to motivate participants to change their behaviors (i.e. eating habits). The incumbent recruits, orients, trains, supervises and evaluates the work of nutrition staff, licensed vocational nurses, and clerical staff. Oversees correct implementation of program policies and procedures. Prepares and submits the required federal and state administrative reports and plans. Manages caseload allocations and continuously develops alternative strategies to provide program services to presently unserved populations. Oversees nutrition education activities and immunization services. Works with area food vendors in evaluating requests for certification as WIC vendors, monitoring and serving as an information resource for food card redemption. The incumbent may act as a nutritional consultant for various clinics and agencies such as the U.T. Department of Pediatrics, U.T. Department of Obstetrics, the Texas Department of Health, city and county WIC administrators, Urban Affairs Clinic, HISD Kay School and San Jose Clinic. Advises health and community agencies on nutritional phases of food programs. Directs and participates in the development of the Nutrition Education and Outreach Plan. Directs clinic activities and staff in the initiation of state, federal and local policies, procedures and guidelines. Conducts orientation, training and in-service of professional staff and support personnel. Develops and prepares the annual operating budget. Determines the eligibility of participants, counsels individuals, and provides follow-up continuity of care.
The incumbent is expected to make decisions in the following areas without submitting those decisions for prior approval: budget allocations, policy development and implementation, development of various state and federal plans, management of caseload and outreach activities, purchasing of office/medical supplies, staffing needs and day-to-day clinic activities. The incumbent submits the following types of decisions for prior approval: final approval for staff hiring, salaries, paid overtime and merit raises, personal vacation requests and major changes in program services (such as opening new clinics or expansion of existing clinics). |

| Required.......... | Four years of experience in nutrition education or public health setting. Must be able to travel within the city to various clinic sites. |
