- The Medical School
complex includes the main building, (nine story, one million square
feet), the John Freeman building, (two story 60,000 gross square-feet)
and a cyclotron facility (12,000 gross square feet.)
- Storm flooding
during the night of June 8-9 left 10 million gallons of water in the
Medical School Building basement and ground floor; the ground floor
of the adjacent John Freeman Building; and two floors of the cyclotron
building.
- On the morning
of June 9, the loading dock was flooded with more than 20 vertical feet
of water.
- Physical damages
are estimated to be at least $52 million and another $53 million in
lost equipment. This estimate is likely to rise once a complete building
inspection is possible.
- Since June 9,
the building has had no electrical power; research activity requiring
refrigeration has been partially maintained through the use of temporary
emergency generators and dry ice. The earliest the building can be back
in operation is mid-July.
- The costs of emergency
cleanup, business interruption and temporary facilities are estimated
to be $30 million.
- The total dollar
impact of this event is currently estimated at more than $205 million,
of which insurance will only cover $50 million.
