UT-Houston has numerous affiliation agreements with other institutions and
agencies in the greater Houston area and in the state. These affiliation
agreements stem from the need to provide a variety of appropriate clinical
experiences for students and residents; to formally align with research
collaborators; and to provide a means for UT-Houston faculty to share their
experiences and expertise widely in the greater community.
While the Medical School has the greatest need for affiliations that provide
clinical experience, the School of Nursing and the Dental Branch also depend
heavily on clinical preceptors and clinics in the community to educate students.
The following clinical teaching affiliations ensure that students and residents
receive appropriate clinical training and experience:
Academic
Memorial Hermann
Hospital and Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital, part of the Memorial
Hermann Healthcare System, have been the primary teaching affiliate of the
UT-Houston Medical School since 1968. Memorial Hermann Hospital and the
Medical School work toward the goals of exemplary patient care, innovative
teaching, community service and productive research. As part of the advanced
dental education programs, the Dental Branch operates general practice,
pediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics in conjunction
with Memorial Hermann Hospital. The hospital continues to support approximately
60 percent of the Medical School’s resident positions in all programs. It
is also the primary site for student clinical education.
Lyndon B. Johnson
General Hospital is a 332-bed public facility staffed by faculty and residents
of the Medical School. The hospital, owned and operated by the Harris County
Hospital District, is medically staffed by Affiliated Medical Services,
an organization formed through an agreement between UT-Houston and Baylor
College of Medicine. Approximately 25 percent of all UT Medical School residents
are assigned to LBJ Hospital. It is also a major clinical site for medical
student education.
The Medical School
also has affiliation agreements with several other local health care institutions.
These include UT M D Anderson Cancer Center; The Texas Heart Institute at
St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital; St. Joseph Hospital; Harris County Psychiatric
Center; Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital; Shriners Hospital for Children-Houston;
Texas Children’s Hospital; and The Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and
Research.
The Dental Branch
also utilizes the affiliation with Memorial Hermann Hospital and has independent
teaching affiliations with seven major medical centers in addition to its
numerous affiliations with public health clinics, local schools and major
universities. Some of these include: UT M D Anderson Cancer Center; The
Institute for Rehabilitation and Research; Veterans Affairs Medical Center;
Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital; Ben Taub Hospital; and The Methodist Hospital.
The School of Nursing
maintains over 200 clinical affiliations, including all agencies in the
Texas Medical Center and many in the broader community. Training occurs
in all types of clinical agencies throughout Houston as well as other areas
of Texas.
The Medical School
and the School of Nursing also rely on outpatient clinics in a variety of
community settings, as well as the offices of private practitioners, in
order to provide students with outpatient clinical setting experiences.
The School of Public
Health maintains concurrent masters’ degree programs with the following
institutions:
UT-Houston School of Nursing
UT-Houston MedicalSchool
Baylor College of Medicine
University of Houston School of Law
University of Houston School of Social Work
This past year,
the School of Health Information Sciences MS and PhD students have pursued
their practica and research interests at UTMB in Galveston, TeleCare International,
Schull Institute, The Methodist Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine Family
Practice, St. Luke’s Hospital, NASA-Johnson Space Center, Memorial Hermann
Hospital, M D Anderson Cancer Center, HAM-TMC Library, VNA of Houston Home
Health Agency, Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake and IntraNexus, IIC in
Florida.
Research
In research, UT-Houston and UT M D Anderson Cancer Center, together with
the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology, interact extensively
in research and educational efforts in the medical center. Many UT-Houston
faculty have joint appointments with other UT-Houston schools and UT M D
Anderson, where UT-Houston students and residents gain clinical experience.
UT-Houston also has numerous affiliations with other colleague institutions,
including a dozen major hospitals, city and neighborhood clinics and public
schools. Some of the primary affiliations are listed below; a complete list
of UT-Houston affiliations follows.
University of Houston,
Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine and UT-Houston have concurrent
enrollment agreements that allow students enrolled in one institution to
enroll for support courses in another.
The UT-Houston Medical
School participates in an Assured Acceptance Program with the University
of St. Thomas and the University of Houston. Agreements have been completed
with these institutions to identify undergraduate students early in their
studies that meet the Medical School’s admissions criteria. Progress is
being made to expand this program to other universities in the south Texas
region and beyond. This program is designed to support selected students
and give them encour-agement and direction. Students in such programs at
each affiliated university are assured acceptance to the Medical School
provided they meet certain defined criteria.
The Graduate School
of Biomedical Sciences has a collaborative agreement with the University
of Houston-Downtown to provide graduate students opportunities to acquire
experience as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses in the natural
sciences.
The Graduate School
of Biomedical Sciences, in collaboration with NASA-Johnson Space Center,
and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UTMB-Galveston, has established
a Space Life Sciences curriculum. This unique graduate training program
addresses questions relating to the alterations of human function in the
space environment, health risks for long term space missions and the habitation
and technological exploitation of space.
The School of Nursing
collaborates with Texas Woman’s University and Prairie View A&M University
to expand nursing education opportunities. In 2001, the School launched
a collaborative agreement with UT M D Anderson to offer Clinical Research
Management for nurses at the Master’s degree level.
TexGen is an alliance
of Texas Medical Center institutions that includes UT-Houston, Texas Heart
Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, M D Anderson, St. Luke’s Episcopal
Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Memorial Hermann Hospital. The
goal of TexGen is to identify genetic factors leading to cardiovascular
disease, cancer and stroke, the three leading causes of death in the country.
As a collaborative genetics resource, TexGen will enable TMC scientists
to expand the scope of their research and expedite the translation of research
findings into cures and disease prevention.
The School of Public
Health has funded research collaboration with 70 institutions as a function
of its ranking as 7th in the National Institutes of Health funding among
Schools of Public Health nationally.

Center/Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences affiliations or
program agreements include the College of the Mainland (nursing); Houston
Baptist University (nursing and psychology); Prairie View A&M (nursing);
