Australia

Queensland and Netherlands Queensland University of Technology/University of Maastricht
The Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research (CHPPR), directed by Guy Parcel, PhD, has formal collaborative agreements with the Queensland University of Technology in Australia and the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. These collaborations involve several center investigators and serve to enhance the research capacity of the Center.

At Queensland University of Technology, CHPPR investigators have taught courses on epidemiology, patient education and health promotion intervention mapping. Center investigators are also collaborating on several research projects in Australia.

At the University of Maastricht, CHPPR investigators have led summer courses/seminars on health promotion intervention mapping, patient education, diffusion of innovations, statistical methods and school health promotion. Center investigators have collaborated on several research projects resulting in over 25 publications. There has also been an international exchange of faculty and students. A significant product from this cooperation between the CHPPR and the University of Maastricht is the development of the textbook for intervention mapping with contributions from faculty from both institutions. The theory and methodology detailed in this text is a promising innovation in the field of health education and health promotion and is already taught to students and health promotion experts in the Netherlands as well as the US.

Belarus Grodno State Medical University
The Office of International Programs hosted a Fulbright Scholar from February through May. The Scholar conducted research on international exchange, telemedicine and distance learning. An affiliation agreement was signed in 2002.
Brazil

Oswaldo Cruz Research Foundation
Oswaldo Cruz Research Foundation “FIOCRUZ” is the Brazilian equivalent of the NIH and has major campuses in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. Contact: Dr. Cynthia Chappell at 713 500 9026 for more information.

Universidad de Brasilia
This program is primarily for graduate or public health students with interests in microbial pathogenesis or immune system functions.

Brazil Universidade de Sao Paulo

Chile University of Chile at Santiago
UT-Houston senior medical students can choose a one month elective rotation in April. Students from the University of Chile rotate here as well. Discussions are in progress for exchanges in a neonatal program, and research collaborations are in development. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.
China Capital University of Medical Sciences
The School of Nursing was selected to participate in a collaborative study in China for the advancement of nursing education. The collaboration also enables Chinese clinical nurse leaders to have in-depth experiences with affiliated Texas Medical Center hospitals as a way of improving care in China.

Ministry of Education
In June 2002, UT-Houston delegation met with members of the Ministry of Education who expressed their desire in adjusting the Chinese education system to become more compatible with the US system in terms of the number of training years and proficiency in using English for academic discussion. Ministry of Health
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation met with directors from the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health expressed interest in making their system compatible with the US and is interested in applying the science and technology of the US to health issues in China. Capital Institute of Medicine
This elective rotational program for medical students began in 1979 and became a formal program in 1985. In April, fourth year medical students receive elective credit and rotate through four Beijing Hospitals. Last year, 20 students entered this rotational program. Fuwai Hospital
In June 2002, UT-Houston delegation and officials and faculty of Fuwai Hospital discussed cardiovascular research and the possibility of exchanges. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Peking University Health Science Center; Tumor Hospital, The First Affiliate Hospital, School of Public Health
UT-Houston delegation met with the president in China and toured the university, hospitals and the School of Public Health in June 2002. An interest in exchange in the areas of faculty and student exchanges for clinical and research projects, and education is being developed. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Peking Union Medical College Hospital
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation met with the vice president of Peking Union Medical College and assistant president for International Affairs in China. A tour was given of the college and hospital, and both sides explored further exchanges. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Chinese Academy of Sciences
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation met with Dr. Zhu Chen, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences to discuss basic research collaboration. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

The 2nd Military Medical University
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation attended a research meeting with more than 20 students and post-doctoral fellows in China. Research opportunities were discussed between our universities. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Fudan University, Zhongshan Hospital, Cancer Hospital
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation visited with several hospitals of Fudan University including, Zhongshan Hospital and the Cancer Hospital in China. Meetings were held at Zhongshan Hospital with the directors of cardiology, pathology and the cardiac ultrasound lab. They also visited laboratories and toured the clinical and teaching facility of the Cancer Hospital, while meeting with the president and chair who had been trained at UT M D Anderson Cancer Center. First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation met in China with the president and vice president of Suzhou University, and the chief of cardiology and dean of the nursing department. An affiliation agreement was signed in August 2002. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Tianjin Tianjin Medical College
This faculty exchange program was established in 1986. Twelve Tianjin faculty members have visited UT-Houston, and six Dental Branch faculty have visited Tianjin for six to 12 months. They have learned research and educational methods in specialty areas of dentistry.

Xi’an Xi’an Jiaotong University
There have been many exchanges between the UT-Houston School of Public Health and Xi’an Jiaotong University and hospital. In June 2002, UT-Houston visited Xi’an Jiaotong University to explore future collaboration in research and education. An affiliation agreement was signed in June 2002. The 4th Military Medical University
In June 2002, UT-Houston delegation met with the president, the director and several chairs and professors in the medical school and preventative medicine in China. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.
Czech Republic 1st Medical Faculty, Charles University
This agreement provides faculty exchange between Charles University and UT-Houston Medical School. UT-Houston exchange opportunities exist primarily for graduate students, and some medical students for a month-long exchange. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.
Egypt Cairo Ain Shams University
This program enables visiting scholars to come to UT-Houston for a month as observers of our facilities and technology, and permits students to complete a two-month rotation as part of their medical training.

Bilbeis Ongoing Program of Study
Through this program, UT-Houston Medical School faculty and students study diarrheal diseases on an ongoing basis, and some UT-Houston Medical School staff is located in Egypt throughout the year.
Germany University of Regensburg
Established in 2000, this relationship consists of an exchange of scientific material, publications and information; faculty, staff and student exchanges; and participation in joint research activities and scholarly meetings.
Guatemala Hospital General San Juan de Dios
The UT-Houston Medical School has an agreement with this Guatemalan hospital to allow medical students to study childhood infectious diseases.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
(Area of Special Administration) Paul Ching-Wu Chu, named best researcher in the United States by U.S. News and World Report in 1990 was named president of Hong Kong University of Science (HKUST) and Technology in 2001. In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation visited the university to explore the possibility of collaboration. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.
Hungary University of Debrecen
Open to medical and graduate students. Contact Dr. Gary C. Rosenfeld at 713 500 7435.
India Government of Maharashtra AIDS Research and Control Center (ARCON)
This collaborative program between the government of Maharashtra and the School of Public Health began in 1994. Dr. Herbert Dupont is a member of the advisory committee for this collaborative project with the purpose of supporting collaborative research, training and control in HIV/AIDS and STDs in the State of Maharashtra.

Bombay Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH)
The purpose of this project is to develop technologies related to health and family planning, and increase public awareness of infectious diseases in India. This affiliation, which began in 1997, is led by Dr. Herbert Dupont.

Hyderabad Deccan Medical School
Located in South Central Asia, this school provides opportunities for elective rotations for senior medical students. Exchange months are best in December and January. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.
Ireland Trinity College, Wellcome Occular Genetics Unit
Ilinkage Mapping and Positional Cloning of the RP 10 Form of Autosomal Dorminant Retinitis Pigmentosa on 79.31.3
This is a joint program between Dr. Stephen Daiger at the UT-Houston Human Genetics Center and the Wellcome Occular Genetics Center, Trinity College, Dublin to study Irish and American families with retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited eye diseases. The goal is to determine the cause of these diseases at a basic biochemical level and to design approaches to therapy. This collaborative project began in 1989.
Japan Gunma University
Primarily for medical and public health students. In November 2001, Gunma University held an International Symposium on Mental Health Problems in Children in honor of the 10th anniversary of the affiliation agreement between our universities. Tokyo Dental College
This affiliation is primarily a teacher exchange program. Since its initiation in 1984, approximately 12 Tokyo faculty members have visited the Dental Branch, and approximately six Dental Branch faculty members have visited Tokyo Dental College.

Graduate School of Tokyo Medical and Dental University
A post-doctoral fellow from this university is spending the next two years in UT-Houston’s Bone and Mineralization Center of the Dental Branch. In September 2001, the Dental Branch visited Tokyo to discuss further collaboration.

Yamaguchi University
The affiliation agreement was signed in 1999. The past director of the School of Nursing and Allied Health visited UT-Houston in April 2002. Contact: Dr. Terese Verklan at 713 500 2129.
Korea Seoul National University
In June 2002, the UT-Houston delegation met with the dean of the College of Medicine and a professor of Internal Medicine in Korea. An affiliation agreement was signed in July 2002. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3559.
Sungkyunkwan University
In June 2002, UT-Houston delegation met with the director of the cancer center at Samsung Medical Center of Sungkyunkwan University in Korea. Tours were given of Samsung Medical Center in the Cancer Center, Cardiac Center and Research Center and Laboratories. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.
Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Universiti Kabangsaan
This school provides opportunities for elective rotations for senior medical students. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.

University of Malaya
A medical student from the University of Malaya arrived at UT-Houston Medical School, and one UT-Houston Medical School student studied psychiatry in Malaysia. This is a unique opportunity to study and work in the area of tropical medicine. This school provides opportunities for elective rotations for senior medical students. Mexico Mexico City Intercontinental University School of Odontology
The Dental Branch has established a relationship with this Mexican dental school. The primary areas under consideration are joint research activities, helping Intercontinental University School develop graduate programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery and periodontics and faculty training.

Guadalajara Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara
Primarily for medical or nursing students. Research programs focus on infectious diseases and gastrointestinal disorders. Dr. Herbert L. Dupont has a long-established research program in Guadalajara. For inquiries on the exchange program, contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.

Monterrey Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon
This affiliation provides opportunities for fourth year medical students to participate in primary care in community, clinic or hospital settings. Pediatric service and comprehensive preschool immunization programs are available. The program stresses physician-patient relationships in a diverse patient population. Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon
Teaching and Research Exchange Program
This project is a joint effort to promote interest in the teaching and research activities of the respective institutions, and to deepen the understanding of the issues of health, economic, cultural and social environment within the respective institutions. Dr. Hardy Loe coordinates the project. This affiliation was initiated in 1997.

Universidad de Nuevo Leon
Established in 1991, this interaction consists of an annual education and research meeting that is held alternately at the two schools, joint research projects that are already on their way and regular visits of faculty members to the other institution.

Queretaro Universidad Autonoma de Queretaro
This exchange program provides for faculty and student exchanges between both institutions.

Tamaulipas Universidad de Tamaulipas

Russia Moscow Stomatological-Medical Institute

South Africa Bellville University of West Cape, South African National Bioinformatics Institute
Retinal Gene Databases
The purpose of this project between Dr. Stephen Daiger and Dr. Winston Hyde that began in 1995 is to establish an international, publicly available database for information on cloned, sequenced and/or mapped retinal genes or disease genes.
Taiwan Chang Gung University
In June 2002, UT-Houston sent a delegation to Taiwan to explore collaboration between the two universities. An affiliation agreement was signed in July 2002. Contact: Dr. Hui-Ming Chang at 713 500 3762.
Thailand Nakhon Pathom Mahidol University
Last year, a UT-Houston medical student studied for one month at this university. Mahidol University is interested in student exchanges and research interactions in such areas as infectious diseases, immunology, health informatics, trauma and bioethics. This is a comprehensive general university with strong programs in medicine, nursing, allied health and biological sciences. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.

Thammasat University
In March 2002, a delegation from Thammasat University arrived at UT-Houston to discuss future collaboration of graduate programs and research. In June 2002, a UT-Houston delegation visited Thammasat University to discuss exchange opportunities among students and faculty for clinical research and educational activities. In September 2002, three faculty members from Thammasat visited UT-Houston to explore areas in the Departments of Pathology, Rehabilitation and the Blood Bank. Turkey Selcuk University
The President of Selcuk University visited UT-Houston in May 2002. An affiliation agreement has been signed.
United Kingdom International Internship in a Cooperative Health Care System
Students have the opportunity to participate in a ten-week international internship in London studying various aspects of health care delivery. The interdisciplinary program, housed in the School of Public Health, offers an interdisciplinary experience for students to expand their understanding of health care.

Richmond College

University of London Department of Molecular Genetics, Institute for Ophthalmology
Mapping Genes Causing Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa
This affiliation between Dr. Stephen Daiger and Dr. Shomi Battacharya began in 1993. The purpose is to exchange patient DNA samples and DNA markers to assist in gene mapping of the disease locus in families with retinitis pigmentosa.

University of London King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry
This affiliation began in 1984 and is primarily a student and faculty exchange program. Three students from King’s College have attended and graduated from the Dental Branch and approximately six faculty members from each school have visited the sister school. Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City Ho Chi Minh City School of Medicine & Pharmacy
Every year two to three senior medical students attend Ho Chi Minh City School of Medicine and Pharmacy for elective rotations. Fluency in either Vietnamese or French is required. This school provides a unique opportunity to visit a hospital ward of infectious diseases. Contact: Dr. Henry Strobel at 713 500 6078.

Institute of Odonto-Stomatology Dentistry Overseas
Dr. Richard Bebermeyer, associate professor of restorative dentistry at UT-Houston Dental Branch, taught dental students infection control and evidence-based dentistry at this institute.
