![]() The Office of Public Affairs is the primary strategic link between The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and its principal constituencies. The role of Public Affairs is to support and advance the mission of the health science center by engaging its constituencies with a clear, consistent and compelling message, involving them in a mutually meaningful and beneficial relationship with the institution, and motivating them to higher levels of support for the institution. The office also provides media, marketing and communication counsel and support to UT Houston’s six schools and to administrative offices including Development, Human Resources, Governmental Relations, and the Office of the President. Public Affairs is organized into three teams: Marketing and Community Relations, Media Relations, and Institutional Communications. Each team carries out its assigned role, while at the same time collaborating interdependently with the other teams to achieve the mission of the office. Media Relations The media relations team is the institutional link with the news media, initiating stories that support the institutional mission, responding to media inquiries and coordinating crisis communications. The team also provides media training for UT-Houston executives and program leaders. For more information about the web site call 713 500 3296. Marketing and Community Relations The marketing and community relations team coordinates the health science center’s integrated marketing initiative, creating a common public “face” and consistent “voice” for the institution. The team also coordinates special events and provides community services that support the mission of the institution. As a part of its commitment to Houston and the state, Public Affairs supports community activities and participates in community events, including health fairs, health walks, golf tournaments and fund-raisers. The team coordinates an institutional speakers’ bureau and places UT-Houston educators, physicians and researchers in numerous speaking venues each year. Anniversary Celebrations During 2002 the health science center celebrated its 30th anniversary. The Office of Public Affairs coordinated the celebration, which included promoting 30 official events. Between 2003 and 2007, several health science center components will celebrate anniversaries, culminating in the 35th Anniversary of the Health Science Center. The schools reaching anniversary milestones are Nursing (30th in 2002), Medicine (35th in 2004), Graduate School (40th in 2003) and Dental Branch (100th in 2005 ).
