Texas Medical Center Environment

UT-Houston is fortunate to be part of one of the largest and most well-known medical centers in the world, the Texas Medical Center (TMC). Located in the heart of Houston, the TMC began in the mid-1940s with Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center. The City of Houston sold 134 acres adjoining Hermann Park as the location for the new TMC. That initial site has grown to more than 700 acres as institutions joined land they already owned, and by gifts and purchases of land. Other facts about the TMC include the following:
  • The TMC has 42 member institutions, all engaged in not-for-profit patient care, education and research.
  • Approximately 150,000 people visit the TMC daily.
  • Roughly 5.4 million patient visits are recorded each year.
  • More than $573 million in funded research is conducted annually.
  • The TMC is the largest employer, collectively, in Houston, with more than 61,000 part- and full-time employees.
  • The TMC has a combined operating budget of more than $4.6 billion annually.

The Texas Medical Center also boasts a comprehensive, state-of-the-art library, the Houston Academy of Medicine -Texas Medical Center Library. Located in the Jesse H. Jones Library Building, the library provides access to the MEDLINE database, has a home page on the Web and participates in the state-wide TexShare program.

For more information, contact the HAM-TMC library web site or call the library at 713 795 4200.
